Years 5 and 6 to swim at Tonbridge School Pool

House Meetings
23rd May 2012
Our aim is to ensure that the children make a smooth and happy transition from the Foundation Stage curriculum to the more mature environment of Key Stage One. Please do discuss any concerns you may have, no matter how small, with either of us at the end of the school day. The children will benefit tremendously if there is good communication. A brief written report will be sent home at Half Term.
We aim to provide a well-balanced and challenging curriculum for Year 1 children. We encourage independence, academic achievement, social development and good manners.
The playground is supervised from 8.30am onwards. The children should leave their belongings in the labelled boxes in the conservatory and go straight outside. There will be a member of staff in the conservatory to help. The children should not go into the classroom before school unless it is raining.
The school day ends at 3.40pm for Year 1 children. After school care is available for siblings of children attending clubs.
After an initial period to allow the children to settle, homework will be set on a Monday. The children will have a homework folder which will contain the spellings they should try to learn during the week. The children should bring their folder back to school the following Monday when they will be tested informally on their spellings. Mathematics tasks may also be set to support the work completed in class that week. Please feel free to comment on the tasks set as homework. It is always helpful to know if the children find the work particularly challenging or enjoyable.
See Year 1 Homework section for more information
Reading is taught in various ways. It may take the form of children reading individually to their teacher or teaching assistant. At least one day each week all of the children will participate in a 30 minute supported group reading session. In some cases the children may participate in group or individual phonic work. The children will bring home a reading book for you to share each evening. Please record the number of pages you have read so that we know where to begin the next day. The reading diary is checked each morning so please feel free to leave a note about any aspect of the school day.
Please provide the children with a named water bottle. We encourage the children to drink regularly throughout the day. The children should have fresh or dried fruit or a smoothie as a snack each morning. Those staying for an after school club may also need another snack to keep them going until 5pm. No chocolate, sweets or crisps please.
In Year 1 the children are encouraged to dress independently and take care of their own belongings. To help us achieve this please ensure that all uniform is clearly named especially socks, tights, ties, gloves and swimming kit. It is very helpful if PE and book bags can be clearly named on the outside.
